Brian vander ark: failure lab grand rapids

Villians (The Verve Pipe’s first album") went platinum, selling over a million records. ‘The Freshman’ peaked at #5 on Billboard’s Top 100. The band had come a long way from recording in closets and selling albums out of a van. They now had a major record label, a 6 figure budget, and a producer known for putting out mega-hits.

But the increase in fame came with an increase in pressure - to release a second album that was even better.

Listen for yourself. What do you think?

First record: Villians, 1996

Second record: The Verve Pipe, 1999

Consider this:

Failure is often relative. If the Verve Pipe had sold 7,000 albums when they were still selling them out of van they likely would have seen it as a huge success! However, following a platinum first release, their second album was deemed a massive flop.

What experiences in your life have been failures only because they directly relate to a previous success?
